Discovery Vitality HealthyFood Benefit: How It Works and What You Actually Get Back

On this page

Eat Better. Get Paid. Welcome to the Vitality HealthyFood Benefit

Because nothing says adulting like cash back on broccoli.

What is the Vitality HealthyFood Benefit?

The Vitality HealthyFood Benefit rewards you for making better food choices. Yes, really. It forms part of how Discovery Vitality actually works as a system, where your everyday habits are rewarded over time

You can earn up to 25% back in Discovery Miles when you buy qualifying healthy groceries at Checkers or Woolworths, whether you’re shopping in-store or online. Think fruit, vegetables, chicken breasts, legumes, whole grains, and fat-free dairy. Woolies Chuckles, unfortunately, do not make the list.

How the Vitality HealthyFood Benefit works

To get started, you activate the benefit in the Discovery app or website. From there, you choose your primary in-store partner and your primary online partner, either Checkers or Woolworths. You’ll earn the highest rewards at those selected partners.

Next, you link your loyalty card, Xtra Savings for Checkers or WRewards for Woolworths, and make sure it’s also linked to your online profile. Every time you shop, you swipe that card or use the linked account online.

Your rewards are paid monthly in Discovery Miles, which sit inside the broader Discovery Vitality rewards system and how your weekly activity and behaviour are rewarded.

To unlock the full 25%, you need to complete your Vitality Health Check and Vitality Age assessment each year. If you skip these, your reward drops to 10%, which is where a lot of people unknowingly leave money on the table without realising it. If you’re on a family plan, your spouse needs to complete them too.

How much can you earn from HealthyFood?

If you have a Discovery Bank account, this benefit becomes significantly more powerful once you start using Discovery Bank and Vitality Money together.

Depending on your account type, Vitality Money status, and how you use your card, your rewards can increase to as much as 75% back in Discovery Miles in a best-case scenario.

That’s not marketing fluff. It’s one of the strongest everyday-use benefits in the entire Vitality ecosystem.

What can you actually earn?

Excluding any additional boost from Discovery Bank, the standard limits are:

  • Typically up to R625 per month for a single member
  • or around R1,250 per month for a family

That’s real money back on groceries you were already buying.

What counts as “Healthy” Food?

Qualifying items are clearly marked in-store and online with the Vitality “V” symbol, so you don’t need to guess.

Healthy items include things like apples, chickpeas, low-fat milk, brown rice, and skinless chicken. On the flip side, items like bacon, chocolate, juice, crisps, and similar products won’t qualify.

In short, if it belongs at a braai or in a snack drawer, it’s probably not earning you anything back.

How you actually get your cashback?

Your Discovery Miles are paid into your Discovery Miles account once a month.

From there, you can use them for flights, fuel, shopping, or even everyday purchases. If you bank with Discovery, you can convert those Miles directly into cash through the app, which is where the benefit really starts to feel tangible.

Does buying unhealthy food affect your rewards?

No, your cashback is not affected.

You will still earn rewards on qualifying healthy items regardless of what else is in your basket. However, your Vitality points are affected.

You earn points for healthy items and lose points for unhealthy ones, but your points will never drop below zero. At worst, you simply earn no points from that shop. The monthly cap is 1,000 Vitality points from HealthyFood purchases.

So while splitting your groceries into “healthy” and “treats” might feel strategic, it doesn’t actually impact your cashback. It only affects your points, and even then, the impact is limited.

Can you shop at both Checkers and Woolworths?

Yes, but with structure.

You can choose one preferred partner for in-store shopping and another for online shopping. At those selected partners, you can earn up to 25% back. At non-preferred partners, you’ll earn up to 10%.

You can only change your preferred partners once every 12 months, so it’s worth choosing based on how you actually shop, not what sounds good in theory.

What changes with Discovery Bank and Vitality Money?

This is where things scale.

Vitality Health gives you up to 25% back. Vitality Money, through Discovery Bank, can boost that by an additional 50%, taking you up to 75% back in total.

To qualify for the boost, you need:

  • A qualifying Discovery Bank account (Gold, Platinum, Black or Purple, or a Suite)
  • An active Vitality Money membership
  • To pay using your Discovery Bank credit card

Your actual reward level depends on how well you manage your money, your spend behaviour, and your bank product tier.

If you’re not sure how to structure this properly across your medical aid, Vitality and banking setup, it’s worth reviewing how everything fits together before making changes.
