With options like the Classic Smart Plan and Essential Smart Plan, the Discovery Smart Series helps you balance contributions, networks, hospitals and day-to-day benefits.
Affordable contributions
The Smart Series keeps monthly contributions lower than most medical aid plans
by using efficient hospital and GP networks.
Day-to-day healthcare
These plans go beyond hospital cover with GP visits, dentistry, eye tests,
medicine allowances, and even sports injury benefits.
Choice of plans
From the comprehensive Classic Smart Plan to leaner options like
Essential Smart, you can choose the balance of cover and contributions
that suits your lifestyle.
Classic Smart Plan
The Classic Smart Plan is the flagship option in the Discovery Smart Series.
It combines comprehensive hospital cover with day-to-day perks that make it one of the most popular choices.
Specialists in-hospital for approved admissions, are covered up to 200% of medical aid rates, and oncology cover is comprehensive.
- Out-of-hospital MRI and CT scans covered (R3,850 co-payment applies, covered by proper Gap cover)
- Unlimited Smart-network GP visits (R70 co-payment)
- One dental check-up and clean, and one eye test per year (small co-payments)
- Over-the-counter medicine allowance
- Acute medicine allowance for prescribed medicine
- Sports injury benefit including specialist visits, physiotherapy, and X-rays
In short, the Classic Smart Plan is a well-rounded choice: strong hospital cover,
practical day-to-day benefits, and contributions that are surprisingly competitive for the level of value offered.
Think of the other Smart plans as Classic Smart’s younger siblings.
As contributions drop, so do some of the benefits — each step down trims a little more.
Essential Smart
Essential Smart is the slimmer sibling of the Classic Smart Plan.
It lowers contributions, but the trade-off is specific in-hospital exclusions, fewer day-to-day benefits and slightly higher co-payments.
- Specialists in-hospital covered up to 100% of medical aid rates, for approved admissions.
- Excludes specific planned admissions including: joint replacements, functional nasal surgery, and selected back, neck, knee, and shoulder surgery.
- Day-to-day: no prescribed medicine allowance, only a smaller over-the-counter allowance.
- GP and dental visits have higher co-payments, typically around R125 to R190 per visit.
- No dedicated sports injury benefit.
Broker tip:Pair Essential Smart with specific Gap cover to help with specialist shortfalls, exclusions and certain co-payments.
Essential Dynamic Smart
Essential Dynamic Smart is like Essential Smart’s sibling who adds extra hoops to jump through.
You get the same trimmed-down benefits, but with an extra layer of admin: every planned admission must be pre-confirmed via the Discovery app
to match you with a Dynamic Smart hospital.
- Same benefits, exclusions, and co-payments as Essential Smart.
- Mandatory pre-approval through the Discovery app for every planned admission.
- Lower monthly contributions compared to Essential Smart in exchange for the added admin step.
This plan works for members who are comfortable managing procedures digitally and want to keep contributions as low as possible,
but it isn’t ideal if you’d prefer a simpler process.
Active Smart
The youngest sibling in the Smart Series, Active Smart is the budget option with the strictest rules and the leanest benefits. It suits members who are young, healthy, and comfortable with tight networks.
- Specialists in-hospital covered up to 100% of medical aid rates, for approved admissions.
- R7,500 payable upfront for every elective hospital admission.
- Neonatal admissions capped at R70,000 per family per year.
- Oncology limited to Prescribed Minimum Benefits at network providers only.
- No maternity benefit.
- Over-the-counter medicine allowance included
- No acute medicine allowance and no sports injury benefit.
- Same planned-procedure exclusions as Essential Smart.
If you choose Active Smart, consider specific Gap cover for specialist shortfalls, and exclusions and make sure you are happy with the hospital and network rules.
Independent broker’s take
The Classic Smart Plan is the clear standout in the Smart Series: comprehensive, well-priced, and flexible enough for most members.
Essential Smart and Essential Dynamic Smart only make sense if keeping contributions as low as possible is the top priority, and you’re willing to live with exclusions and admin steps.
Active Smart is the bare-bones entry option — it works for a narrow group but most members eventually upgrade once health needs change.
To boost value, pair your plan with Gap cover for protection against specialist shortfalls, and explore Vitality benefits for rewards and lifestyle incentives.
Remember, you can downgrade at any time, but upgrades are only effective from the start of the next year.
FAQs
What’s the difference between the Discovery Smart Series and the Core Series?
The Smart Series includes day-to-day benefits like GP visits, dental and eye checks, and medicine allowances, while the Core Series focuses on hospital cover only. The Classic Smart Plan also provides cover for out-of-hospital MRI & CT scans (not covered on Core plans) and is better priced than all but one of the Core plans. See our Core Series guide.
The Essential Smart and Active Smart Plans are less comprehensive than the Core plans in-hospital.
Can I upgrade or downgrade between Smart plans?
You can downgrade at any time during the year. Upgrades are only allowed at year-end and take effect from 1 January.
Do I need Gap cover with a Smart plan?
Gap cover is strongly recommended. Smart plans pay specialists up to 100% or 200% of medical aid rates, but shortfalls are common. You’ll also face co-payments on certain procedures such as in-hospital scopes, and for out-of-hospital MRI & CT scans. Gap cover helps protect you from these unexpected out-of-pocket costs.
Which Smart plan offers the best value?
The Classic Smart Plan is the best balance of benefits and contributions. It includes strong hospital cover, oncology, day-to-day benefits, and out-of-hospital MRI & CT scans- a real stand out option across the entire Discovery Health plan range. Essential and Active Smart are cheaper, but only make sense if you are comfortable with exclusions, higher co-payments, and fewer benefits.
