Discovery Executive Series
Discovery Executive Series – The Flagship Plan (For When You Really Use It)
The Executive Plan is Discovery’s top-of-the-line option. It has the perks, the prestige, and the price tag to match. It feels like the plan where “everything is covered,” but the reality is a little more nuanced.
This plan is built for big claimers and households with serious medical usage. Its defining feature is the unlimited Above Threshold Benefit (ATB): once you reach the above threshold benefit, Discovery keeps paying without an overall cap but there is a sublimit for different benefits. You also get 300% payment rate to in-hospital specialist (approved admissions), funding towards a private ward (when available). It is the most generous plan in the range, but only worth the premium if you will truly use what sets it apart.
What Makes Executive Different
- Unlimited ATB: Once you reach your annual threshold, Discovery pays for covered day-to-day claims without an overall cap. Some category sub-limits, like dentistry, medication and allied healthcare professionals, still apply.
- 300% specialist rates in hospital: Triple the standard scheme rate for in-hospital specialists, though Gap Cover is still smart for cases where bills exceed that and of course to cover co-payments (Yes, even this plan has them).
- No Priority-specific co-payments: You avoid the extra R22,850 for joint replacements, and other Priority-exclusive deductibles. Standard co-payments, like those for scopes, still apply.
- Private ward options: Executive members can opt for private wards in hospital (where available).
- Enhanced oncology benefits:
- R500,000 per 12‑month treatment cycle for oncology cover, then you pay a 20% co-payment for the rest of that cycle. Gap cover is strongly recommended to soften that blow.
- Extended Oncology Benefit for select expensive treatments that meet Discovery’s entry criteria.
- Oncology Innovation Benefit, funding cutting-edge targeted and precision treatments at 75% of the Discovery Health Rate (subject to clinical rules).
How Executive Still Works
Even at this level, Executive uses the same basic structure as the other threshold plans:
- Medical Savings Account (MSA): part of your premium is set aside for your day-to-day expenses like GPs, specialists, and blood tests.
- Self-Payment Gap (SPG): when your MSA is depleted, you pay out of pocket until you reach your annual threshold. Yes, even on Executive, you still hit this stretch where you are covering costs yourself.
- Above Threshold Benefit (ATB): once you cross that line, Discovery pays for covered claims without an overall cap, but some category sub-limits still apply. This is the part heavy users love, because the tap stays open all year.
Important to Know About Emergency Admissions
On all Discovery plans, emergency hospital admissions are covered in full at cost. Once the member is stabilised, funding reverts to the rules of their plan.
When Executive Makes Sense
- High-claiming households that reliably burn through their threshold each year and want unlimited ATB for predictable relief.
- Members who need access to Additional Disease List (ADL) cover, including certain high-cost medicines and treatments only available on Comprehensive and Executive plans.
- Those who see multiple specialists, have ongoing high day-to-day costs, or use newer, expensive treatments.
- People willing to pay the premium, but only if their medical needs are significant enough to make full use of the plan’s benefits.
When It Is More Than You Need
For most members, Saver, Classic Smart, or Classic Comprehensive with Gap Cover will provide what they realistically need at a much lower cost. Adding Severe Illness cover to a life policy can boost protection without overspending on medical aid.
- You will still face a Self-Payment Gap on Executive, along with standard co-payments.
- The “unlimited ATB” sounds magical and can be, but you only feel the value if you consistently use it.
- The Additional Disease List and access to specialised medicine and technology are key benefits on this plan, but if you do not have a condition that requires them, you will likely pay for cover you will not use.
Our Take
Executive is Discovery’s flagship for a reason. Unlimited above threshold benefit, 300% specialist rates, private ward perks, and top-tier oncology benefits make it unmatched for heavy claimers and households with high medical usage.
But it is not a “free-for-all” plan. There are still co-payments, limits, and clinical rules to navigate. If you are not a heavy utilizer, you are usually better off on Saver, or Classic Smart with Gap Cover and severe illness cover on a life policy, all of which offer excellent benefits at a fraction of the cost.
