Discovery Comprehensive Series

Discovery Comprehensive Series – The “Almost Top-Tier” Plans

Comprehensive plans sound like the golden ticket: bigger benefits, broader cover, and names that suggest you will never pay for a doctor’s visit again. The truth is, these plans can be valuable for the right people, but they still work on the same day-to-day benefit layered structure as Priority.

Why People Choose Comprehensive

  • Broader day-to-day funding than Priority: the same MSA → Self-Payment Gap → ATB structure, but without Priority’s long list of extra co-payments and with a larger threshold benefit limit.
  • Additional Disease List (ADL) conditions covered, including anxiety, depression, osteoporosis, and certain high-cost biologics that are not funded on other plan series.
  • Access to the Extended Oncology Benefit, which funds selected (very specific) expensive cancer drugs (for specific types of cancer) after you use up the standard R500,000 ‘annual’ oncology limit (strict clinical entry rules apply).
  • The same Personal Health Fund (PHF) and Day-to-Day Extender Benefit (DEB) as Priority, but with more generous allowances.

The Structure You Still Need to Understand

Comprehensive is not a free-for-all plan. It uses the same layered system as Saver and Priority:

  1. Medical Savings Account (MSA): part of your premium is set aside for GPs, specialists, medicines, blood tests, etc.
  2. Self-Payment Gap (SPG): once the MSA is finished, you pay for everything yourself until your claims reach the annual threshold. This is the part where many members feel like they are paying for a “comprehensive” plan but still pulling out their wallet constantly.
  3. Above Threshold Benefit (ATB): Discovery starts paying again, but with limits:
  • There is an overall cap on what can be claimed while you are in the ATB.
  • Sub-limits still apply for specific categories like dentistry, and allied healthcare professionals (think physio, psychologists etc).
  • Anything you have already spent in those categories earlier in the year gets deducted from your ATB sub-limit, so the available benefit can vanish faster than expected. For many people, the ATB feels like the prize at the end of a marathon… only to find the finish line has a cap on how many snacks you can take.

In short, Comprehensive is more forgiving than Priority, but it still has guardrails.

When We Actually Recommend It

Comprehensive plans make sense if you:

  • Need Additional Disease List (ADL) medicines or biologics only funded here, where the monthly medicine costs justify the higher premium.
  • Are a high-claim household that regularly burns through the Self-Payment Gap and makes full use of the ATB.
  • Are willing to work with the layered structure so you do not lose out.

When It Is Probably Overkill

Most people jump to Comprehensive thinking it means “everything is covered.” In reality:

  • You will still face a Self-Payment Gap, which can be a long, expensive stretch.
  • The overall ATB cap and sub-limits still apply, so certain claims can leave you paying out of pocket.
  • Saver or Classic Smart plus Gap Cover and Severe Illness cover on a life policy usually covers the same needs better (and for less) unless you rely on ADL meds or hit multiple benefit categories hard each year.

Our Take

Comprehensive can be worth it for big-claim families, members on high-cost chronic medicines, or those who know they will use the ATB fully each year. But for the average member, it is often more expensive than necessary.

Most of our clients do just as well, or better, with Saver or Classic Smart combined with Gap Cover and a Severe Illness benefit on their life policy for extra financial protection.

Another Plan in the Comprehensive Series – Classic Smart Comprehensive

There is another plan in Discovery’s Comprehensive Series called Classic Smart Comprehensive (CSC). It is not widely known and is often mistaken for a cheaper version of Classic Comprehensive, but it works very differently:

  • Requires Smart network hospitals and providers for most care.
  • Has a smaller Medical Savings Account (15% of your premium), which means your Self-Payment Gap is larger before Discovery starts paying again.
  • Does not include the Additional Disease List (ADL) or the Specialised Medicine and Technology Benefit, two key reasons many people choose full Comprehensive.

In short: CSC suits members who want a threshold-style plan at a lower cost and are happy to stay within the Smart network. It is not a full Comprehensive plan and will not suit anyone who needs ADL cover or broader oncology benefits. However, it can offer an expensive safety net for a really bad year of out-of-hospital medical expenses.
